“La nostra società è ciò che noi facciamo” (M. e R. Friedman).
I started reading a book by M. and R. Friedman entitled “Free to choose. A Personal Statement”. I am reading it in Polish (my native language). I want to share a thought expressed in these sentences, it’s a quotation from page 49 of my copy of the book.
Ho iniziato a leggere un libro di M. e R. Friedman intitolato “Liberi di scegliere. Una dichiarazione personale”. Lo sto leggendo in polacco (la mia lingua madre). Voglio condividere un pensiero espresso in queste frasi, una citazione da pagina 49 della mia copia del libro.
And here is the aforementioned quote: “Our society is what we make it. We can shape our institutions. The natural features and the social environment limit the number of alternatives before us. But they do not stop us, if we wish, from building a society that protects and develops freedom, that bases the economy and all activity above all on free exchange, and that is able to keep government in its proper role – that of servant, not master.”
Ed ecco la suddetta citazione: “La nostra società è ciò che noi facciamo. Possiamo plasmare le nostre istituzioni. Le caratteristiche naturali e l’ambiente sociale limitano il numero di alternative che abbiamo davanti. Ma non ci impediscono, se lo desideriamo, di costruire una società che protegga e sviluppi la libertà, che basi l’economia e tutte le attività soprattutto sul libero scambio, e che sia in grado di mantenere il governo nel suo giusto ruolo – quello di servo, non di padrone”.
To what extent are we, the citizens of democratic states, free, is our freedom and democracy not limited to voting once every few years and those in power not fulfilling their promises and “doing what they want” anyway? Ask yourself: am I a free man? Shouldn’t we citizens be the ones to decide how much we should tax? And if we should be the ones to decide this (as well as so many other things), why is our freedom so restricted?
Fino a che punto noi, cittadini di Stati democratici, siamo liberi, se la nostra libertà e la nostra democrazia non si limitano a votare una volta ogni pochi anni e se coloro che sono al potere non mantengono le loro promesse e “fanno comunque quello che vogliono”? Chiedetevi: sono un uomo libero? Non dovremmo essere noi cittadini a decidere quanto tassare? E se dovremmo essere noi a decidere questo (così come tante altre cose), perché la nostra libertà è così limitata?
