Ci sono valori più importanti della massimizzazione del profitto (commento al libro di Yancey Strickler).

Let me start with a quote from Yancey Strickler (translated from Polish): “Focusing on financial growth is not a bad thing. (…) Money is important. It is just that it is not the only form of value that we should be protecting and developing. Profit maximisation has driven us into a trap via three assumptions: 1) the meaning of life is to maximise financial resources, 2) we are individuals trapped in a world full of adversity, and 3) this situation is inevitable and permanent.”
Vorrei iniziare con una citazione di Yancey Strickler (tradotta dal polacco): “Concentrarsi sulla crescita finanziaria non è una cosa negativa. (…) Il denaro è importante. È solo che non è l’unica forma di valore che dovremmo proteggere e sviluppare. La massimizzazione del profitto ci ha spinto in una trappola attraverso tre presupposti: 1) il senso della vita è massimizzare le risorse finanziarie, 2) siamo individui intrappolati in un mondo pieno di avversità e 3) questa situazione è inevitabile e permanente”.
Focusing too much on maximising profit, devoting a huge amount of our time to this, can impoverish us as we will never be fully satisfied, whether we have our own business or work for someone on a salary. Money is important, it allows us to pursue our dreams and satisfy our needs. But they are not the most important. Yancey Strickler writes that there are many things in life that are valuable, such as love, community, security, knowledge and faith.
Concentrarsi troppo sulla massimizzazione del profitto, dedicandovi un’enorme quantità di tempo, può impoverirci perché non saremo mai pienamente sazi, sia che abbiamo un’attività in proprio sia che lavoriamo per qualcuno con uno stipendio. Il denaro è importante, ci permette di perseguire i nostri sogni e di soddisfare i nostri bisogni. Ma non sono i più importanti. Yancey Strickler scrive che nella vita ci sono molte cose che hanno valore, come l’amore, la comunità, la sicurezza, la conoscenza e la fede.
In order to strive for a better world, a more just world, it is important to remember values other than profit maximisation, which in a sense closes our eyes to the needs of those who are less well off than we are. In your everyday life, do you think about what you can do to ensure that future generations live in greater security and justice, or do you think about what you can do on a daily basis to improve the lot of those who are disadvantaged in life? Why don’t you start thinking about it? Do something to make the world a better place, please.
Per lottare per un mondo migliore, un mondo più giusto, è importante ricordare valori diversi dalla massimizzazione del profitto, che in un certo senso ci fa chiudere gli occhi di fronte ai bisogni di chi sta meno bene di noi. Nella vita di tutti i giorni, pensate a cosa potete fare per garantire alle generazioni future una maggiore sicurezza e giustizia, o pensate a cosa potete fare quotidianamente per migliorare la sorte di coloro che sono svantaggiati nella vita? Perché non iniziate a pensarci? Fate qualcosa per rendere il mondo un posto migliore, per favore.
