I was encouraged to write this post by the article ‘Momenty zwrotnicowe” (Magazyn Niedziela, No. 1, June-August 2023). The author of the article is Professor Grzegorz Kucharczyk.
Sono stato incoraggiato a scrivere questo post dall’articolo “Momenty zwrotnicowe” (Magazyn Niedziela, n. 1, giugno-agosto 2023). L’autore dell’articolo è il professor Grzegorz Kucharczyk.
In the article, the author describes moments of great significance for the history of Poland and the Polish nation. He gives five such moments: the year 966 – the Christianisation of Poland; the year 1384 – Princess Jadwiga of Anjou was crowned king of Poland; the year 1555 – King Zygmunt August of Poland declared that he would not be a king of conscience (thanks to this, the Protestant Reformation did not prevail in Poland); the year 1795 – the destruction of the Polish state – the Third Partition of Poland; the year 1948 – “the Primate, without whom there would be no Pope from Poland”.
Nell’articolo l’autore descrive momenti di grande importanza per la storia della Polonia e della nazione polacca. Ne cita cinque: l’anno 966 – la cristianizzazione della Polonia; l’anno 1384 – la principessa Jadwiga d’Angiò fu incoronata re di Polonia; l’anno 1555 – il re Zygmunt August di Polonia dichiarò che non sarebbe stato un re di coscienza (grazie a questo, la Riforma protestante non prevalse in Polonia); l’anno 1795 – la distruzione dello Stato polacco – la Terza Partizione della Polonia; l’anno 1948 – “il Primate, senza il quale non ci sarebbe stato un Papa dalla Polonia”.
It is not my purpose to describe these five important moments in Polish history. I just want to mention that Poland and the Polish people are a proud and strong nation, that is how we were and that is how we will be. For my ancestors, what mattered was God, honour and the Homeland, and these are still values for many older and younger Poles. We also know how to help other nations, as evidenced by our Polish aid to Ukrainian mothers and their children. We Poles remember our history and want our children to remember it and learn from it.
Non è mia intenzione descrivere questi cinque momenti importanti della storia polacca. Voglio solo ricordare che la Polonia e il popolo polacco sono una nazione orgogliosa e forte, così eravamo e così saremo. Per i miei antenati, ciò che contava era Dio, l’onore e la Patria, e questi sono ancora valori per molti polacchi anziani e giovani. Sappiamo anche come aiutare le altre nazioni, come dimostra l’aiuto polacco alle madri ucraine e ai loro figli. Noi polacchi ricordiamo la nostra storia e vogliamo che i nostri figli la ricordino e imparino da essa.
One has to be decent, humble, but when necessary defend one’s homeland. Many times Poland has been betrayed by its allies, but thanks to God’s providence MY COUNRY POLAND has not perished.
Bisogna essere dignitosi, umili, ma quando è necessario difendere la propria patria. Molte volte la Polonia è stata tradita dai suoi alleati, ma grazie alla provvidenza di Dio MIA POLONIA non è morta.
