Are we free?

Siamo liberi?

(This post is in English and Italian)

Are we free? Do we feel free? Can a citizen of the European Union call himself a free man? I do not think so. We do have certain freedoms, but at the same time we are enslaved, and only God gives us true freedom. GOD does not force us to do anything. We can do everything, although not everything benefits us. In the following paragraphs, I will expand on my view of freedom as a European (I am Polish).

Siamo liberi? Ci sentiamo liberi? Un cittadino dell’Unione europea può definirsi un uomo libero? Non credo. Abbiamo alcune libertà, ma allo stesso tempo siamo schiavi, e solo Dio ci dà la vera libertà. Egli non ci obbliga a fare nulla. Possiamo fare tutto, anche se non tutto ci è utile. Nei prossimi paragrafi approfondirò la mia visione della libertà come europeo (sono polacco).

This is how I see freedom in my country (I think it is similar in other European countries): my love for my homeland Poland commands me to vote in local and parliamentary elections – and it is the ballot that is one of the few manifestations of my freedom. I can vote and I can exercise this right. However, at state level, it is the MPs and their political parties who will decide on the tax scale and other matters. Very rarely are there referendums that give citizens more opportunity to decide their fate. I hope that democracy in Europe will evolve towards the self-determination of citizens about what happens in their countries. In my opinion, MPs, senators and parties have too much power.

Questo è il modo in cui vedo la libertà nel mio Paese (penso che sia simile in altri Paesi europei): l’amore per la mia patria, la Polonia, mi spinge a votare alle elezioni locali e parlamentari – ed è la scheda elettorale una delle poche manifestazioni della mia libertà. Posso votare e posso esercitare questo diritto. Tuttavia, a livello statale, sono i parlamentari e i loro partiti politici a decidere la scala delle tasse e altre questioni. Molto raramente ci sono referendum che danno ai cittadini maggiori opportunità di decidere il loro destino. Spero che la democrazia in Europa si evolva verso l’autodeterminazione dei cittadini su ciò che accade nei loro Paesi. A mio avviso, deputati, senatori e partiti hanno troppo potere.

I am not describing in this post the kinds of freedoms I enjoy in a democracy, because that is not the purpose of this post. The purpose is to show my readers that a democracy without lots of referendums is not favourable to citizens. I believe that it is in referendums that tax thresholds could be set, that we could vote for or against abortion (although in my opinion abortion is the killing of unborn innocent children), that referendums could determine whether we Poles (or for example Slovaks) want more refugees in our countries. I am not a Euro-enthusiast, I believe that various nations coped before the European Union came into existence and for that reason would still be coping if the European Union did not exist.

Non descriverò in questo post il tipo di libertà di cui godo in una democrazia, perché non è questo lo scopo del post. Lo scopo è mostrare ai miei lettori che una democrazia senza molti referendum non è favorevole ai cittadini. Credo che sia nei referendum che si possano stabilire le soglie fiscali, che si possa votare a favore o contro l’aborto (anche se a mio parere l’aborto è l’uccisione di bambini innocenti non ancora nati), che i referendum possano determinare se noi polacchi (o per esempio slovacchi) vogliamo più rifugiati nei nostri Paesi. Non sono un euro-entusiasta, credo che le varie nazioni abbiano affrontato il problema prima che l’Unione Europea nascesse e per questo motivo continuerebbero ad affrontarlo se l’Unione Europea non esistesse.

So how do we get more referendums, which would be a tool in the hands of the people, because politicians would have to take into account the opinion of the peoples for whom they (the politicians) legislate? Ladies and gentlemen – I do not know how to do this. Referendums in greater numbers is my dream. For now it is only a dream, there are very few of these referendums in Poland. Referendums could also be held at the level of provinces, districts and municipalities. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I am not right. Quindi come possiamo ottenere più referendum, che sarebbero uno strumento nelle mani del popolo, perché i politici dovrebbero tenere conto dell’opinione dei popoli per i quali (i politici) legiferano? Signore e signori, non so come fare. Il mio sogno è che i referendum siano più numerosi. Per ora è solo un sogno, in Polonia ci sono pochissimi referendum di questo tipo. I referendum potrebbero essere indetti anche a livello di province, distretti e comuni. Forse mi sbaglio, forse non ho ragione.
